Launch into STEM

The Library is pleased to announce that we recently were awarded a $15,000 grant from CITGO Petroleum to fund Launch into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math)!

This program will be designed to engage middle school students (ages 11-14) in hands-on, interest based interaction with science education while inspiring creativity and curiosity. CITGO’s grant will enable us to equip our Teen STEM Lab with appropriate technology, including a 3-D printer and a zSpace: Virtual Reality Learning experience computer. Launch into STEM Learning will include open lab hours as well as bi-monthly programs planned and presented in collaboration with CITGO employees with science expertise. Programming and open lab hours will begin in January.

Programs

Launch into STEM programs will focus on three aspects of STEM education: robotics, energy sustainability, and engineering.

Bi-monthly programs for a group of 12 students will be hosted by Lemont Public Library in the Teen STEM Lab and co-led by STEM professionals from CITGO and the Lemont community. The robotics programs will use Ozobots and LEGO Mindstorm kits to teach students the basics of coding, programming, and problem solving. Energy sustainability will be discussed using zSpace software and renewable energy science kits featuring hydropower and wind power experiments. Engineering and design focused programs will allow students to create and 3-D print an original design. There will also be weekly open lab hours to allow students, including students (ages 11-14) not attending the bi-monthly programs, to pursue independent project using the STEM technology. All of the programs will seek to inform students on career opportunities in the STEM field, spark discussion on the cultural and social relevancy of advances in STEM technology, and most of all support student’s curiosity and experience with STEM subject areas in preparation for more advanced study in high school and college.
