The mission of the Lemont Public Library District is to meet the diverse and changing needs of the community by providing a center for lifelong learning and a gathering place for all residents of the district and offering a balanced selection of current, historical, and cultural materials, programs, services and technological resources for community enrichment.
Lemont Public Library District serves a population of 21,685 in the village of Lemont, Illinois and the surrounding township, which is located 25 miles southwest of Chicago in Cook County. Originally settled in 1836 and incorporated in 1873, historic Lemont is one of the oldest and most unique communities in northeastern Illinois. With rolling hills and three waterways providing a scenic view, Lemont combines historic small town charm with big city amenities.
From its inception in 1929 as a small collection of books housed in the basement of the Village Hall, the Library has expanded its collections, services and facilities to keep pace with the development of Lemont and meet the needs of a vibrant, diverse community.
The Library has a collection of approximately 100,000 items for all ages. . Popular formats include adult fiction, books on CD, DVDs and children’s picture books. The Library offers a variety of cultural and instructional programs for all ages, from story times, reading programs and teen gaming, computer classes and adult enrichment series, musical performances and art exhibits. The Library provides a variety of technology resources including free, secure WIFI throughout the facility, laptop computers with Windows 8 for computer instruction, loanable ereader, public computers with Internet access, electronic databases and Microsoft Office applications and wireless printing.
In 2013, the Library Board hired Dewberry Architects to complete a Facility Assessment to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of the facility and projections for future building and capital improvement needs.Lemont Public Library is a member of the Pinnacle Library Cooperative, along with Fountaindale Library District, Joliet Public Library, White Oak Library District, Plainfield Public Library District and the Shorewood-Troy Public Library District. Our patrons have access to the combined collections of Pinnacle, totalling 1.4 million items through our online catalog Pinnacle.
Lemont Public Library is a member of Reaching Across Illinois Library System, a consortium of libraries in Northern Illinois that facilitates sharing of library materials through delivery. The Library also participates in the Illinois Reciprocal Borrowing Program that enables Illinois public library cardholders to visit other public libraries throughout the state and check out materials on their home library card.
